Troops from the 73 Battalion under the tactical umbrella of Operation HADIN KAI, working alongside local vigilante groups, successfully neutralised two suspected ISWAP terrorists during a midnight ambush on July 16, 2026.
The counter-insurgency operation took place along the Tamsukawu Road, an area situated directly behind the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) campus in Borno State.
The gun battle erupted at approximately 12:15 a.m. when troops stationed along the dark route intercepted the moving terrorists.
Following a fierce exchange of tactical gunfire, two of the insurgent fighters were killed on the spot, while the remaining members of the group exploited the night cover to flee deep into the surrounding wilderness.
Military sources confirmed that the strategic ambush was part of an aggressive, ongoing layout designed to constrict terrorist mobility and choke out infiltration routes leading toward Maiduguri's outskirts.
Security operations remain heavily reinforced in the theatre.
