A 67-year-old tenant, Pastor Bolaji Olukotun, has died following an alleged forced eviction at Admiralty Homes Estate in Lekki, Lagos.
The incident took place during an unresolved property dispute between Olukotun and his landlord regarding a failed rent-to-own purchase agreement.
Following the expiration of the lease, agents acting on behalf of the property owner moved to take possession of the residence, resulting in Olukotun being rushed to a nearby medical facility where he later passed away.
According to the deceased's legal counsel, Barrister Akpobome Deniran, he arrived at the scene after receiving an urgent distress call and found the pastor lying on the ground outside the premises surrounded by scattered personal belongings.
The attorney alleged that several armed individuals, an estate agent, a prospective buyer, and a mobile police officer carried out the eviction without presenting a valid court order or legal execution warrant.
"My father was in severe physical distress. If someone was already writhing in pain, why leave him outside instead of taking him to a hospital?"
Family members, including the deceased's son, Ayodeji Olukotun, have disputed claims made by individuals at the scene that the victim had voluntarily consumed a toxic substance.
Calling for a formal investigation by the Nigeria Police Force, the family is demanding that all parties involved in the eviction and security clearance be brought in for questioning to establish the exact circumstances leading to the fatal incident.
