The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and prominent rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has announced a radical plan to completely abolish the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in their current structural forms if elected President of Nigeria.
Sowore made the bold declaration in an extensive post on his verified X handle on Wednesday afternoon, arguing passionately that both institutions have become outdated relics of a bygone era.
He insisted they should be replaced immediately with modernized, pragmatic systems that prioritize direct merit, stable employment, and practical skill sets.
The former presidential candidate noted that universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education must possess the unhindered institutional autonomy to admit qualified candidates directly based on their own internal transparent criteria without dealing with an unnecessary central intermediary.
"When I become President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, JAMB will be abolished. Admission into tertiary institutions should be determined by the institutions themselves under a transparent, merit-based system, not by another layer of bureaucracy.
The National Youth Service Corps, in its current form, will be scrapped.
In its place, we will establish a two-year, voluntary National Job Corps that guarantees participants meaningful employment, practical skills, entrepreneurship support, and pathways into permanent careers," Sowore stated emphatically.
Sowore’s policy comments dropped bare hours after the Federal Executive Council approved a sweeping, comprehensive overhaul of the 53-year-old NYSC scheme, marking its first major evaluation since its initial establishment in 1973.
The government's new reforms extend orientation camp to six weeks, introduce 11 specialized career streams, and mandate technology-driven deployments to reflect prevailing national security realities.
Despite these adjustments and JAMB's recent policy updates to halt affiliated degree operations, Sowore remains steadfast that Nigeria's youth do not need more compulsory, government-mandated schemes, but rather genuine job opportunities and the ultimate economic freedom to choose their own futures.
