A formidable political storm is gathering ahead of the 2027 presidential elections as former Governor of Borno State and prominent chieftain, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has issued a blunt geopolitical projection, asserting that the northern voting bloc will completely withhold its electoral support from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Peter Obi.
Appearing on Channels Television’s flagship political program, *Politics Today*, Sheriff systematically dismantled the opposition's newly forged electoral calculus, which anchors its northern penetration strategy on the choice of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as Obi’s vice-presidential running mate.
According to Sheriff, deep-seated regional grievances stemming from past administrative policies during Obi's tenure as Governor of Anambra State have created an insurmountable trust deficit.
He claimed that grassroots political mobilizers within the influential Kwankwaso-led *Kwankwasiyya* movement in Kano are actively warning their leader against entering into any binding joint-ticket agreements with the NDC candidate.
"I don’t worry about Peter Obi because I know Northerners will never support him. The situation is different now. During Peter Obi’s time as governor, he worked to get Northerners to leave Anambra State. This is what people in Kano are telling Kwankwaso now.
They claim they have always stood by him and will keep doing so if he runs for president, but they won’t support him if he sides with Peter Obi," Sheriff remarked.
Shifting his focus to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) camp, Sheriff similarly dismissed the immediate presidential ambitions of veteran contender and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.
While acknowledging Atiku's immense national qualifications and status as a highly respected elder statesman, Sheriff insisted that the North cannot ethically claim the presidency in the next electoral cycle.
Citing the informal rotational agreement governing the country's executive power, he emphasized that because former President Muhammadu Buhari completed a full eight-year tenure, the geopolitical South must retain control via President Bola Ahmed Tinubu until 2031, effectively advising Atiku to suspend his lifelong ambition for another five years.
