The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has leveled explosive corruption allegations against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for the immediate resignation of the President over what he terms "grand corruption" and deep administrative incompetence.
In a comprehensive public dissertation titled “Grand Corruption: Nigeria’s Greatest Threat,” broadcasted via his verified X network on Sunday, the former Anambra State Governor brought national attention to an alleged N8.83 trillion in unbudgeted public expenditures.
Citing a recent, high-level International Monetary Fund (IMF) consultation review document, Obi forcefully argued that the monumental expenditure was completely omitted from the formally approved 2025 national budget, shielding the multi-trillion Naira liquidity from essential legislative oversight and civil service audit scrutiny.
"The IMF now reveals that about N8.83 trillion in expenditure undertaken in 2025 is not reflected in the budget. This expenditure is not budgeted and is therefore not under legislative oversight or administrative scrutiny. This is horrible... The sort of corruption that is ingrained in total disregard of elementary rules of public finance management poses a grave danger to national security and the stability of the Nigerian state," Peter Obi declared analytically.
The opposition leader provided a detailed breakdown of the financial metrics, noting that the missing N8.83 trillion constitutes roughly 2 percent of Nigeria’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and commands over 35 percent of the country’s entire N23.96 trillion capital expenditure budget.
Obi claimed that if these substantial public resources had been cleanly channeled through legal budgetary systems, they would have completely revolutionized Nigeria's crumbling healthcare networks, built standard educational facilities, and funded thousands of rural cottage industries to generate massive youth employment.
The Presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are yet to release a formal counter-brief regarding the IMF financial consultation metrics raised by the NDC flagbearer.
