Osun Governorship Race Under Threat: IGP Olatunji Disu Warns Governor Adeleke Over Intelligence Reports of Fugitives Hiding in Seat of Power
With exactly six weeks left until the August 15 Osun State governorship election, the political atmosphere has reached a boiling point. Conducting his maiden official visit since assuming office, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, arrived in the state on a high-stakes mission to address escalating inter-party clashes and political killings. His first port of call, a courtesy visit to Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Government House in Osogbo, immediately transformed into an intense standoff over election security.
Delivering a blunt security brief, IGP Disu revealed that the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, explicitly flagged intelligence showing that violent political suspects are actively "hibernating" within the walls of the Government House to evade justice. "If that is true, why should suspects be in Government House?" Disu questioned, warning that the police and the law will relentlessly hunt down criminals on both sides of the political divide.
Stating that he is well aware of how politicians recruit thugs during election season, the IGP declared that Osun would be a strict exception. He issued a stern ultimatum to his field commanders, warning the Commissioner of Police and the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) that he would not tolerate a single additional complaint regarding failure to clamp down on political actors.
Governor Adeleke did not take the allegations lightly. Vehemently dismissing the claims as politically motivated falsehoods, the governor issued an aggressive counter-accusation against the local police command. He charged that certain police officers are acting as partisan agents ahead of the elections and demanded an immediate reorganization of the state's security architecture. "All these lies... I don't play that," Adeleke fired back, challenging law enforcement to remain neutral. "If it is my son that committed a crime, arrest him," he asserted.
The IGP subsequently moved the security summit to the palace of the Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Adesola Lawal, where traditional leaders added their voices to the calls for peace, citing unresolved investigations from past local crises. Following a brief encounter with peaceful protesters at the State Command Headquarters, the police chief concluded his tour at a critical stakeholders' meeting, reiterating to party elites that the upcoming exercise is an election, not a war.
