A total of 44 schoolchildren and teachers who were brutally abducted by heavily armed bandits from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have successfully regained their freedom after spending 56 grueling days in captivity. The rescue operation was executed seamlessly by a joint task force of Nigerian security agencies.
Confirming the rescue on Friday evening, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, revealed that the extensive security breakthrough was achieved through tactical precision without any financial exchange or concession to the terrorist cell.
Operatives neutralized several gang members during the assault on their remote hideouts within the Old Oyo National Park, while eight active kidnappers were successfully taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The traumatic ordeal originally began on May 15, 2026, when gunmen staged a coordinated raid on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esiele communities.
Sadly, two dedicated teachers lost their lives during the crisis—one killed during the initial ambush and another gruesome murder occurring while in the terrorist camp.
Reacting to the rescue, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde expressed overwhelming joy, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu highly commended the joint military-police-DSS alliance for ending the security siege. The presidency has directed immediate medical and psychosocial rehabilitation support for all the victims.
