Nigeria's newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is dominating national headlines following the launch of a revolutionary digital infrastructure pact alongside a sweeping operational restructuring of the police force.
The primary catalyst for the trend is an official memorandum of understanding signed between the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.
Under this partnership, the federal government will systematically transform police stations across all 774 Local Government Areas into localized digital connectivity hubs via Project BRIDGE—an initiative expanding Nigeria's fiber-optic backbone from 30,000 to 120,000 kilometers.
IGP Disu joined Communications Minister Bosun Tijani to unveil an AI-powered, voice-enabled local language statement-capture platform designed to drastically accelerate criminal investigations by allowing citizens to give statements in local dialects.
Concurrently, the police chief is trending due to a massive, rigid operational shakeup announced during a senior command conference in Abuja.
To decentralize field control and curb rising security vulnerabilities, IGP Disu approved the immediate deployment of Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) directly to their respective geopolitical zones effective June 15, 2026.
Coupled with this decentralization, the IGP has issued an uncompromising nationwide mandate ordering tactical units to execute a fierce crackdown on unregistered vehicles, terrorism corridors, and cross-border kidnapping syndicates, coming off the back of the successful tactical rescue of former Minister Adebayo Adelabu's abducted family in Oyo State.
