The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dominated anti-corruption headlines following a major breakthrough in the high-profile prosecution of Dr. Olu Agunloye, Nigeria's former Minister of Power and Steel.
The case is trending intensely because the anti-graft agency has officially unveiled fresh, decades-old documentary evidence before the Federal Capital Territory High Court.
Dr. Agunloye is standing trial over an amended seven-count charge involving official corruption, forgery, and the allegedly fraudulent 2003 award of the $6 billion Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project contract to Sunrise Power Transmission Company Limited.

The prosecution alleges that Agunloye unilaterally reduced the Federal Government’s equity stake in the vital power project from a recommended 25% ($1.5 billion) down to 10% ($600 million) without presidential approval, in absolute defiance of directives from then-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The immediate catalyst for the trend is the testimony of the EFCC’s fifth prosecution witness (PW5), Iliya John Iyakwari, an Assistant Director of Legal from the Federal Ministry of Justice.
During the trial session, the EFCC successfully tendered and certified highly sensitive, historic extracts from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting of May 21, 2003.
These newly admitted documents provide the court with concrete documentary proof that the former minister acted entirely outside his legal mandate when signing away the country's largest hydro-infrastructure deal.
The trial has been adjourned to June 8, 2026, for cross-examination, keeping the multi-billion dollar scandal at the top of national judicial news.
