False WhatsApp Broadcast Lures Hundreds to Gumel Secretariat for Non-Existent N75,000 Cash Grant

A highly coordinated viral hoax circulated on WhatsApp and other instant messaging platforms triggered immense chaos and disruption at the Gumel Local Government Secretariat in Jigawa State on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Hundreds of local residents abruptly abandoned their daily farms, markets, and businesses, rushing to the administrative headquarters under the false impression that the government was disbursing a N75,000 cash grant to citizens holding valid COVID-19 vaccination cards issued during the state’s massive 2021–2023 immunization campaigns.

Frustration heavily mounted as heavily disappointed community members—some of whom traveled from remote settlements located over 15 kilometers away—were turned back by security personnel and administrative staff.

Reacting swiftly to the situation, the Special Adviser to the Gumel Council Chairman on New Media, Hussaini Gumel, released a statement categorically dismissing the broadcast as an absolute fabrication with no foundational basis in any existing federal or state social intervention program.

He confirmed that emergency sensitization units have been deployed to actively counter the spread of the fake news.

Concurrently, the Jigawa State Ministry of Health, speaking through its Public Relations Officer, Sagir Nayaya, strongly cautioned the public to strictly verify breaking health and financial security updates directly from official ministerial portals and verified mainstream media platforms before reacting to unsolicited viral trends.
