United States President Donald Trump has publicly declared that Russia must urgently negotiate a formal peace agreement to terminate its dragging conflict with Ukraine.
The American leader pledged his direct executive assistance to mediate the terms after meeting face-to-face with President Volodymyr Zelensky and fellow Group of Seven (G7) world leaders on Tuesday during the high-profile G7 summit held at the picturesque French lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains.
Arriving at the global summit fresh off orchestrating a preliminary diplomatic breakthrough to wind down hostilities with Iran, President Trump characterized his initial sideline discussions with Zelensky and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio as "very good."
European heads of state and Ukrainian emissaries capitalized on the summit to demonstrate that Ukraine’s tactical leverage has improved dramatically, utilizing their momentum to pitch for robust air defense reinforcements and tighter economic sanctions ahead of potential negotiations.
"I'm gonna do whatever I can," President Donald Trump informed reporters on the summit floor, lamenting the immense loss of life. "Look, Russia should make a deal."
During the closed-door discussions, Zelensky reportedly utilized a calculated psychological strategy by presenting Trump with graphic visual evidence detailing the devastating aftermath of a recent Russian missile strike on Kyiv’s historic Pechersk Lavra monastery. Diplomatic sources confirmed that Trump expressed deep disapproval of the strike on the sacred cultural site.
While European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took to social media to proclaim that "Russia's fatigue is openly showing" and urged the West to double down on military aid, Trump remained somewhat noncommittal regarding the immediate imposition of further punitive U.S. sanctions.
He did, however, note that Washington is structurally positioned to let remaining Russian oil waivers expire, thanks to the market stabilization achieved via the recent interim Iranian peace accord.
French President Emmanuel Macron and other EU leaders remain focused on ensuring that any final memorandum of understanding does not inadvertently validate Moscow's territorial claims or entrench Tehran's ballistic programs.
