The National Leader of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has vehemently rejected a recent Federal High Court judgment sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, which effectively set aside an earlier judicial directive compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the political association as a fully recognized national party.
Describing the ruling as an illegal anomaly completely lacking in legal merit, the former Bayelsa State Governor claimed that the newly formed political movement is currently under systemic attack from external political forces who are deeply threatened by its rapid organizational growth and national progress over the last five months.
The legal setback arose after the presiding judge, Justice Isah Dashen, vacated the court’s previous December 10, 2025, judgment which had ordered INEC to finalize the NDC's political registration.
Justice Dashen held that the original proceedings were constitutionally defective because material facts were concealed and vital stakeholders were completely shut out from the hearings.
The judicial reversal followed an urgent application filed by the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which argued it possessed a distinct legal interest in the matter and ought to have been joined as a necessary party before any definitive judgment was passed.
The court subsequently ordered that the substantive suit must start completely afresh, with INEC, PMP, and the NDC properly joined as active parties.
"All I can say is that the order lacks legal merit and is intended to affect the foundational credibility and efforts of our party. The order is illegal and will not stand," Senator Seriake Dickson declared. "It is coming from those who are shocked by the progress the NDC has made within such a short period."
Dickson sharply criticized the judicial decision, labeling it as a dangerous blow designed to stifle multi-party democracy and narrow Nigeria's broader democratic space. He asserted that the application was maliciously driven by an unregistered association with zero legitimate legal interest in the original case.
Reassuring party faithful, the NDC leader revealed that a formidable team of constitutional lawyers has been assembled to appeal the ruling immediately.
Far from demoralizing his supporters, Dickson maintained that the controversial court ruling has paradoxically triggered a massive wave of solidarity, with thousands of Nigerians registering as new NDC party members nationwide to resist the external interference.
