The Rivers State Government has executed a major regulatory enforcement operation, sealing five private medical facilities and an unlicensed patent medicine store across the state due to systemic involvement in child trafficking, fatal malpractice, and unauthorized clinical training.
The extensive enforcement drive, orchestrated by the State Anti-Quackery Committee alongside coordinated security agencies, culminated in the direct arrest of seven suspects, including several fraudulent facility proprietors who were operating complex medical operations without valid credentials or state licensing.
Detailing the shocking discoveries on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the Anti-Quackery Committee and Permanent Secretary-designate of the Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, revealed that EL DONA Hospital in the Elekahia axis of Port Harcourt was actively running a child-harvesting syndicate.
Investigations proved that the operator systematically deceived laboring mothers into believing their newborns had died post-delivery, secretly swapped the live infants with dead babies, and subsequently trafficked the living children to illegal buyers. All active workers at the facility have been taken into police custody.
Further enforcement actions revealed extreme medical negligence in alternative local government zones.
A patent medicine store in Ndele was shut down following the tragic death of a 20-year-old secondary school graduate who succumbed to an illicit injectable medication administered by an untrained vendor.
Concurrently, PLARIV Hospital in Omoku was discovered to be under the leadership of a non-medical practitioner from Plateau State, who performed invasive surgical operations and illegally managed an unaccredited training institute housing over 60 auxiliary nursing students.
