The Inspector General of Police (IGP) crack team has officially tracked down and arrested a man identified as Ifechukwu Dennis in Benin City, Edo State, for allegedly originating and circulating a highly inflammatory, AI-generated voice note that impersonated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The high-profile arrest was confirmed on Thursday evening, June 4, 2026, by the Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who noted via his official X account that the suspect purposefully distributed the deepfake recording to exploit gullible targets across social media platforms.
The successful police operation effectively brings a close to a week-long nationwide controversy that originally erupted on May 27, 2026, when a heavily manipulated video involving prominent social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), went virally active online.

In the doctored footage, a synthetic voice closely resembling President Tinubu’s was heard making highly toxic claims, suggesting that the prevailing insecurity in the South-East region was a deliberate political strategy, that he had forcefully pressured opposition candidate Peter Obi to step down prior to the 2023 elections, and that his administration was entirely indifferent to the economic hardships of citizens.
Comprehensive forensic investigations conducted by independent news agencies later established that VDM had never published the malicious audio; rather, an unidentified digital bad actor had stolen authentic footage from VDM’s Instagram page and layered the dangerous AI-generated deepfake over it before recirculating it across the web.
