A tragic cloud of intense grief has completely enveloped the Lapai community in Niger State following the untimely death of Yahaya Ibrahim Tafida, a 14-year-old student of the prestigious Police Secondary School, Minna, who was killed instantly by a sudden lightning strike.
The heartbreaking incident occurred around 6:00 PM on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the local headquarters of the Lapai Local Government Area, plunging the entire neighborhood into deep mourning.
According to an eyewitness account provided by a local resident, Mohammed Musa, the young teenager was enjoying a recreational evening football match with his close friends on the sports field of the Government Girls’ Day Secondary School when an aggressive rainstorm accompanied by a violent windstorm suddenly overspread the area.
Seeking immediate protection from the worsening torrential downpour, the victim and his playmates rushed to take shelter underneath a large tree on the perimeter of the pitch.
Tragically, a high-voltage bolt of lightning struck the tree directly, killing the young student on the spot. Local community leaders and shaken residents have expressed profound condolences to the grieving family, warning youths to avoid open spaces and trees during seasonal storm outbreaks.
