The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially launched a comprehensive internal audit and technical investigation following the controversial leakage of sensitive personal data belonging to veteran Nollywood actor and politician, Emeka Ike.
The structural data breach escalated over the weekend when Lere Olayinka, the media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to publish screenshots of what appeared to be Ike's confidential voter profile straight from INEC's administrative back-end portal.
The leaked credentials, which circulated wildly across social media channels, exposed the actor's unique Voter Identification Number (VIN), private application number, date of birth, registration center, and profile picture.

Ike, who recently contested and lost the House of Representatives primary ticket for the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency under the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), appeared on Channels Television's The Morning Brief on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, condemning the act as the "height of political rascality" and vowing severe legal redress.
Reacting via an official public statement on Tuesday, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC's Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, confirmed that preliminary findings from the commission’s digital audit trail have successfully identified the internal user account used to harvest the data.
Crucially, Haruna clarified that there was absolutely no external hacking or infrastructural cyber breach of INEC’s ICT network.
Instead, an authorized registration officer participating in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise misused their valid administrative credentials to illegally retrieve the specific file.
The electoral umpire noted that the Department of State Services (DSS) has independently commenced an aggressive forensic investigation to identify and prosecute all culpable personnel involved in the data compromise.
