The Zamfara State Government has firmly distanced itself from an unauthorized peace initiative that resulted in the mass abduction of 50 community elders by a notorious bandit syndicate in the Maradun Local Government Area.
The elderly residents were taken hostage in early June after embarking on a voluntary mission to the Muntsira Forest to negotiate a local truce with a prominent bandit kingpin identified as Jammo, in hopes of securing safe passage for upcoming agricultural cultivation.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with BBC Hausa regarding the ongoing captivity of the delegates, Executive Governor Dauda Lawal expressed deep dissatisfaction with the unilateral step taken by the community leaders.
The governor emphasized that his administration was never notified prior to the high-risk excursion, declaring that the state government has consistently rejected appeasement policies and will maintain its strict stance against negotiating with active terrorist cells.
"They did not inform the authority before embarking on such a dangerous step they have taken," Governor Dauda Lawal stated.
"They are on their own. As I said, who sent them to negotiate? It certainly was not the government. We have consistently stated that we do not support negotiations with terrorists."
While confirming that a thorough state investigation is currently underway to ascertain the full dynamics of the incident, Governor Lawal maintained that historical precedents in Zamfara prove that financial payouts and amnesty dialogues only serve to empower criminal networks to purchase advanced weaponry.
Despite growing concerns from local security analysts regarding reprisal attacks and displaced villages, the state administration reiterated its resolve to rely entirely on decisive military operations and tactical pressure until the bandits unconditionally surrender.
