The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a monumental infrastructure fund exceeding ₦4.26 trillion to finance extensive development projects across Nigeria’s road, maritime, and aviation sectors.
Presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, the extraordinary session marks one of the single largest day-one capital investment approvals targeting national transportation networks since the inception of the current administration.
The Federal Ministry of Works, led by Senator David Umahi, secured the largest allocation, totaling approximately ₦3.94 trillion.
Umahi announced the authorization of 23 critical highway interventions across 10 states designed to dramatically reduce transit times and stimulate regional economic integration.
A major highlight includes the rescoping and re-awarding of a 409-kilometer dual carriageway project in Niger State to the Dangote Group under the tax credit scheme at a value of ₦1.8325 trillion.
Due to heavy industrial traffic, the entire corridor will be constructed using advanced reinforced concrete pavement technology. Furthermore, the executive council approved the concession framework for the long-term maintenance of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with the President directing immediate concrete reconstruction on the failing Ibadan approach section.
"The total that is approved under the Dangote tax credit is N1.8325tn. Mr President directed that we should use due process to procure that Lagos-Ibadan expressway to be done on concrete technology," Minister of Works David Umahi confirmed.
Simultaneously, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, detailed the approval of ₦34.398 billion awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited for the construction of a strategic cargo and passenger airstrip in Gboko, Benue State, to serve as a vital logistics hub for agricultural distribution and humanitarian emergency services.
Bolstering the blue economy, the Council approved ₦286 billion for four critical maritime security and ecological projects.
As announced by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, on behalf of the Marine Ministry, the capital includes ₦59.05 billion for two state-of-the-art marine pollution control vessels to clean up plastic waste in territorial waterways, ₦80.03 billion for six pilot cutter boats, ₦34.06 billion for two specialized firefighting vessels, and ₦112.85 billion for the extensive capital and maintenance dredging of the crucial Escravos Channel.
