A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday granted activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore a fresh bail bond valued at N200 million.
The landmark judicial decision arrives weeks after the court aggressively revoked his previous bail terms and issued a bench warrant following his physical absence from scheduled criminal trial proceedings.
Delivering the ruling, presiding trial judge Justice Muhammad Umar explicitly stipulated that the fresh bail application can only take operational effect upon the provision of two substantial sureties.
According to the court mandate, the first surety must be a recognized traditional ruler hailing from Sowore's immediate community, while the secondary surety must possess verified landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Furthermore, the human rights activist was ordered to deposit his international travel passport with the administrative registrar of the court pending the total determination of the ongoing cybercrime prosecution.
"There is no bus on earth that can stop this revolution. We warned them, but they would not listen... What I want to tell Nigerians is that it is not about my freedom; it is about the liberation of the Nigerian people," Omoyele Sowore defiantly stated shortly after his release.
The legal battle stems from a prosecution launched by the Department of State Services (DSS), which accuses the media publisher of cybercrime infractions over various social media posts where he allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu using defamatory terms. Sowore has consistently denied the allegations, entering a firm "not guilty" plea.
Following the brief remand period at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Justice Umar formally handed the defendant over to his legal defense team, headed by senior practitioners, and adjourned the multi-count lawsuit until Monday, July 6, 2026, when Sowore is legally mandated to open his main defense.
