The political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections grew increasingly charged on Monday, June 1, 2026, as Phrank Shaibu, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—who is running under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform—strongly lambasted former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.
The verbal altercation erupted after Lawal publicly dumped the ADC, alleging that the party's recent presidential primary election was heavily marred by manipulation and rigged in favor of the former Vice President.
Dismissing the claims as baseless tantrums, Shaibu asserted that the internal election accurately reflected the democratic will of thousands of ADC members across the federation.
In a highly critical counter-statement, Shaibu accused the former SGF of introducing ethnic and religious dog whistles into national discourse simply because his preferred candidate suffered defeat.

He pointedly noted that Lawal found the primary process completely flawless in Adamawa State, where his own cousin, Omar Suleiman, successfully clinched the ADC governorship ticket.
"Nigerians are entitled to ask whether the process was only credible when it favored his family and only rigged when it produced a presidential candidate he did not support," Shaibu stated.
Evoking Lawal’s controversial past "grass-cutting" financial scandal under the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential aide declared that no amount of post-primary bitterness or identity politics would alter the fact that the 2027 race will be decided strictly on service records and economic reform blueprints by the Nigerian electorate.
