Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has officially commenced the 2026 Hajj operations, marking the departure of thousands of Nigerian Muslims for the annual spiritual pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
The symbolic flag-off ceremony took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday.
The first batch of travelers includes approximately 5,000 pilgrims from Kogi State, who are being supported by a team of 150 officials to ensure their welfare and safety.
During his address, Vice President Shettima reminded the pilgrims that they represent the nation on a global stage. “Mr. President understands that governance is ultimately a covenant of service to his citizens, and that every Nigerian life deserves care and attention,” Shettima remarked, emphasizing the government's commitment to a seamless exercise.
Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, also joined the Vice President at the airport, charging the pilgrims to remain disciplined. He urged them to strictly follow all guidelines set by the Saudi authorities to maintain Nigeria's positive image abroad.
According to Qubes Magazine, the 2026 Hajj season is expected to see a significant turnout of Nigerians following improved logistical arrangements by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
