In a major diplomatic development, US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, effective Saturday, May 9, 2026.

The truce, which coincides with Russia’s World War II Victory Day, was reportedly brokered through direct communication with Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The agreement includes a significant humanitarian gesture: a mutual swap of 1,000 prisoners from each side.

Trump, who has faced pressure to resolve the four-year-long conflict since taking office last year, expressed optimism on Truth Social, calling the truce "the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought War."

According to Qubes Magazine research online, the announcement comes amidst a week of intense drone strikes and heightened tensions in Kyiv.

While a unilateral Russian ceasefire was initially dismissed by Ukraine as a propaganda tactic to protect the Victory Day parade, the involvement of the US president has added a new layer of international weight to the temporary cessation of hostilities.
