Olalekan Fakoyejo, the Assistant Business Editor at TheCable, has detailed a harrowing experience involving an assault by a Nigerian Army soldier during a traffic altercation in the Ogba area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Saturday while Fakoyejo was commuting in a tricycle from Ikeja.
According to the journalist, the confrontation began when he voiced his disapproval of a soldier's attempt to punish another tricycle driver by forcing him to climb onto the roof of his vehicle—an act that was significantly obstructing traffic.
Fakoyejo narrated that the soldier, overhearing the remark, dragged him out of his tricycle and began shoving him.
"The soldier that was threatening me just slapped me immediately I turned my face towards him," Fakoyejo stated during an interview with Punch Metro.
The assault reportedly escalated as the soldier attempted to hit the journalist with a wooden club, causing Fakoyejo’s phone to fall and shatter on the tarmac.
This incident adds to a growing list of concerns regarding military-civilian relations in Nigeria. Efforts to reach Army spokesperson Appolonia Anele for a comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
According to Qubes Magazine, the Nigerian Army has faced repeated calls for internal disciplinary reform following several high-profile reports of personnel assaulting civilians across various states.
