In a move that has captured the attention of Abuja residents, Pastor Sarah Omakwu, the Senior Pastor of Family Worship Centre, has made a public plea to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
During a Sunday service, Omakwu was seen kneeling on the pulpit to appeal for the preservation of the Jabi Lake recreation area.
The pastor expressed deep concern over reports that the public space might be allocated for private development.
“I go on my knees as a mother in this land that Jabi Lake Recreation Centre should not be given to anybody. That is where people go for exercise... that is where young people go. I beg you, Mr. Minister, in the name of God, let it go,” she pleaded.
While she lauded Wike for the massive infrastructure and highway developments that have eased movement in the city, she argued that public recreational spaces must remain accessible to the common citizen.
This appeal follows the FCT Administration's signing of agreements in February with private firms like Suburban Broadband Limited to upgrade the facility.
While the government aims to boost tourism, residents like Omakwu fear that privatization will restrict access for those who use the park for sports, community bonding, and small-scale business.
