The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has issued a directive ordering an immediate and unreserved official apology to Professor Eyo Ekpe, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, and the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) over a recent high-handed operational raid.
The move follows widespread institutional outrage and warning strike actions across Akwa Ibom State after armed EFCC operatives stormed the premises of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) on May 12, 2026.
The administrative operation—originally designed to authenticate disputed medical records—quickly degenerated when operatives allegedly assaulted and briefly detained Professor Ekpe, who serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at the teaching hospital.
According to a press statement released by the anti-graft agency's communications headquarters on Monday, the executive decision was reached following the receipt and meticulous consideration of a field intelligence preliminary report.

Acknowledging that professional boundaries were crossed, the statement reads:
“Pursuant to the receipt and consideration of a preliminary report on the May 12, 2026 incident involving personnel of the Commission and medical staff of the Uyo University Teaching Hospital, the Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has directed that an apology be made to Professor Eyo Ekpe, the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of UUTH, and members of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA. He expressed regret at the discomfort that the unfortunate episode caused for staff of the hospital and members of the public.”
Olukoyede emphasized that while the primary constitutional mandate of the commission remains focused on ridding Nigeria of financial corruption and economic sabotage, the basic physical wellbeing and civil liberties of citizens remain central to the agency's operational ethics.
He assured the medical community that a full-scale administrative inquiry is underway, promising that any field agent found to have acted outside the commission's code of professional conduct will face severe internal disciplinary measures.
While pledging to continuously engage with healthcare stakeholders to establish collaborative boundaries and forestall a recurrence of such tense confrontations, the EFCC boss maintained that the incident would not deter the commission from executing its statutory mandates across the country.
He concluded by appealing directly to the NMA and other professional bodies not to withdraw their vital systemic support from the commission’s ongoing anti-corruption campaigns.
