Ogun Murder Shock: Teacher Overdoses Teenage Girl, Demands Ransom for Sports Betting

Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 30-year-old private school teacher, Nathaniel Baiyegun, for the alleged abduction and gruesome murder of his 16-year-old former student, Florence, who was an active candidate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Preliminary police intelligence reports indicate that Baiyegun reconnected with the teenager a year after she departed his previous employment station in Ogijo.

The suspect allegedly lured the victim to an uncompleted building under the pretext of organizing specialized academic coaching classes.

Police sources revealed that the suspect attempted to force the minor into a romantic relationship with his associate, identified simply as Sola.

When compliance failed, the suspect held her captive and administered a fatal overdose of D5 sleeping tablets to keep her quiet.

Upon discovering that the victim was gasping for breath and subsequently died from the heavy sedation on April 11, Baiyegun hired a commercial motorcycle, lied to the operator that the girl was severely ill, and dumped her corpse into a local river within the MTN area of Ogijo.

In a shocking twist, the suspect proceeded to use the victim’s mobile phone to extort a ransom of N500,000 from her grieving father, completely concealing the fact that the girl was already deceased.

In a voluntary confessional statement obtained by police detectives on Friday, Baiyegun, who taught Physics and Further Mathematics, admitted to collecting the illicit funds.

"I lied to him that his daughter would be released as soon as the ransom was paid. I spent almost all the money on online sports betting, and I regret it now," the suspect confessed.

Confirming the breakthrough, the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, commended the strategic leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, adding that the case will be prosecuted aggressively to ensure full judicial justice for the deceased teenager's family.
