The national political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections has witnessed a major structural realignment as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) officially closed the sale of its Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the office of the President, leaving the 2023 Labour Party standard-bearer, Mr. Peter Obi, as the sole contender for the ticket.
The administrative milestone was confirmed on Monday evening at the party's national secretariat in Abuja.
High-level internal party sources confirmed that at the expiration of the strict purchase window, the former Governor of Anambra State was the lone political heavyweight to complete the financial acquisition of the presidential intent packages.
In an official public service memo issued by the NDC National Secretary, Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party announced that while the presidential race forms are permanently closed to new entries, the national leadership has approved a one-week administrative extension for individuals contesting secondary positions.

The deadline, which was originally set for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, has been extended to midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026, applying exclusively to aspirants eyeing governorship seats, senatorial red chambers, the federal House of Representatives, and various State Houses of Assembly.
Detailing the forthcoming operational timetable for the political party's pre-election logistics, Enekweizu stated:
"Screening of all aspirants who have successfully purchased and completed their respective forms will officially commence on Tuesday, May 19, and run through Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The collection and returning of final Nomination Forms for screened and fully cleared aspirants will open on May 20. No further extensions will be entertained beyond these stipulated windows."
The NDC leadership explicitly directed all regional and national aspirants to physically present themselves before designated evaluation panels across the federation.
Candidates are mandated to submit six complete duplicates of vital personal dossiers, including educational certifications, formal declarations of age, statutory voter's cards, active NDC membership credentials, and comprehensive curriculum vitae.
According to the party's working guidelines, the Screening Committee has been instructed to strictly evaluate aspirants based on local electoral peculiarities, proven capacity, administrative competence, and verifiable character metrics.
Furthermore, the committee will systematically implement the party’s affirmative action policy frameworks to prioritize the inclusion of women, youth networks, and persons living with disabilities (PLWDs).
With Obi having recently migrated to the NDC platform alongside key opposition allies following a brief stay in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), political strategists observe that his solo form purchase effectively guarantees his emergence as the unified consensus presidential candidate to lead the opposition coalition's ticket in the 2027 polls.
