The Katsina State command of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has joined the rest of the federation to mark the scheme’s 53rd anniversary, celebrating over five decades of fostering inter-ethnic integration, post-civil war reconciliation, and community development across Nigeria.
The commemorative activities were officially flagged off at the orientation camp pavilion by the NYSC Katsina State Coordinator, Mr. Okwor Evans.
The anniversary celebration featured a colorful public procession comprising state officials and active corps members, marching from the camp facilities through the heart of Katsina township to interface with local host communities.
Addressing participants during the public parade, Mr. Evans described the milestone anniversary as a period of profound institutional reflection and appreciation.

He reminded the youth corps members of the historic background of the scheme, which was established by the federal military government under General Yakubu Gowon in 1973 as a vital mechanism for national unity, reconstruction, and rehabilitation.
"The relevance of the NYSC in nation-building and integration cannot be underestimated," Evans noted, tasking the current batch of graduates to actively engage with core sub-programs like the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) platform and local Community Development Services (CDS) to maximize their service year impact.
The state coordinator further commended the Federal Government for its continuous financial and structural commitments toward sustaining the scheme despite evolving economic hurdles.
The historic 53rd-anniversary event in Katsina reached its peak with the symbolic cutting of the anniversary cake at the state administrative headquarters, amid cheers and cultural displays from the serving corps members.
