In a historic announcement that signals the end of a dominant era in English football, Pep Guardiola has officially confirmed he will step down as manager of Manchester City at the conclusion of the current season.

The 55-year-old tactical mastermind’s legendary ten-year reign at the Etihad Stadium will conclude this Sunday following Manchester City’s final Premier League fixture against Aston Villa.

Since arriving in Manchester in 2016, Guardiola built a relentless football juggernaut, capturing an unprecedented 20 major trophies.

His glittering haul includes six Premier League titles—highlighted by a historic run of four consecutive crowns between 2021 and 2024—three FA Cups, five League Cups, and the club’s maiden UEFA Champions League trophy secured during their iconic 2023 treble-winning campaign.

"Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time," Guardiola stated on Friday in an emotional farewell address released through official club channels.

"Nothing is eternal; if it were, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City."

Speculation regarding the Catalan coach's future intensified early this week after Manchester City narrowly missed out on the 2025/2026 Premier League title to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal following a tense 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

While Guardiola will officially vacate the dugout, the City Football Group confirmed he will retain a prominent global role within the organization, transitioning into an international brand ambassador.

The timing of his departure coincides with the football world awaiting the final resolution of an independent commission inquiry regarding over 100 alleged financial regulation breaches brought against the club by the Premier League.

As City prepares for a major transition, widespread industry reports indicate that former Chelsea manager and erstwhile Guardiola coaching disciple, Enzo Maresca, is heavily favored to assume the managerial reins at the Etihad next season.
