The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has successfully received a fresh batch of 497 stranded Nigerian migrants evacuated from the Niger Republic.
The returnees, who were rescued from the notorious migration transit hub of Agadez, arrived safely at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) on Friday afternoon.
The Federal Commissioner of the NCFRMI, Dr. Tijjani Aliyu Ahmed, confirmed that the successful profiling operation followed a highly coordinated humanitarian intervention spearheaded by the Federal Government in active partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Represented during the reception by the Kano Field Coordinator, Lubah Liman, the commissioner explained that the evacuation was executed under the IOM’s specialized Voluntary Humanitarian Return initiative.

According to officials, the Consular and Migration Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously issued an operational alert regarding the planned airlift of stranded citizens between May 22 and May 25, 2026.
This arrival represents the first phase of a multi-batch repatriation exercise.
While initial projections targeted roughly 600 persons for the opening flight, the final manifest recorded a total of 497 returnees, comprising 174 adult males, 97 adult females, 137 boys, and 89 girls.
The inter-agency reception was managed by the NCFRMI alongside the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, among other security configurations.
Upon arrival, the returnees underwent formal documentation, including biometric registration through the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) managed by immigration operatives.
They were subsequently moved to the Immigration Training School in Kano for welfare administration, psychosocial evaluation, and systematic reintegration into their respective home states.
