Enugu NDC Scraps Zoning, Throws 2027 Governorship Ticket Open to All Candidates

The Enugu State Chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially announced its decision to abandon traditional zoning arrangements for its gubernatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party leadership stated that the ultimate goal is to field the most capable candidate available to dislodge the ruling party from the state’s seat of power.

Speaking to journalists immediately following an intensive State Working Committee (SWC) meeting on Friday, the Enugu NDC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Ugwueze, clarified that the party executive structure, led by State Chairman Dr. Johnpaul Anih, has intentionally left the race completely open.

Consequently, any qualified citizen of Enugu State, regardless of their senatorial district of origin, is eligible to vie for the party’s primary flag.

“This decision aligns with the party’s determination to win the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State and to achieve that, we are not going to sacrifice capacity on the altar of zoning," Ugwueze declared.

"Capturing the Lion Building is our major target and we have to exploit every available option and strategy."

While the apex executive ticket remains un-zoned, the NDC leadership note that they have implemented strict zoning templates for senatorial positions across the state to ensure equity, fair power distribution, and good conscience.

Under the approved structural framework, the party has specifically locked and zoned the Enugu East Senatorial District slot to the Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, emphasizing that Enugu North Local Government Area remains the only zone within that bloc that has yet to occupy the seat in recent political dispensations.
