President Tinubu Taps Development Expert Dr. Muttaqha Darma to Tackle Nigeria’s Housing Crisis
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Dr. Muttaqha Darma as the new Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
The ceremony, held at the State House on Friday, April 24, 2026, follows the resignation of the former minister, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, last week.
Dr. Darma, a seasoned scholar with a PhD in Industrial Engineering and former Executive Secretary of the PTDF, faces the monumental task of addressing Nigeria’s estimated 20 million-unit housing deficit.
In his inaugural address to journalists, Darma criticized the inefficiency of government-led housing projects compared to the private sector, pledging to bring "strategic innovation" to the ministry.
"Government houses are being abandoned while private developers are thriving. There must be something wrong," Darma remarked, promising immediate structural reforms to ensure that unhoused Nigerians gain access to affordable shelter.
