Panic has gripped the Sapele community in Delta State following the daring abduction of the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area, Bright Abeke.
The council boss was kidnapped on Friday evening by approximately 15 arms-wielding gunmen who stormed a hotel along Owumi Road.
Eyewitnesses report that the attackers arrived in a Range Rover SUV and two other vehicles, firing sporadically to disperse guests.
During the operation, a member of a local vigilante group, identified as Ufuoma, was shot and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Political associates of the APC chairman have gathered at the scene, calling for immediate government intervention.
“The CP has ordered that the command special anti-kidnapping unit deploy their arsenals to ensure that he is rescued unhurt and the suspects arrested,” confirmed SP Bright Edafe, PPRO for the Delta State Command.
The abduction occurred less than 24 hours after suspected hoodlums issued violent threats in the area, leading to a complete cordoning of entry and exit points in Sapele by security operatives.
