Legal Blow: Senator Natasha Ordered to Pay ₦1 Billion in Damages to Former Governor Yahaya Bello
A High Court in Kogi State has ordered Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to pay the sum of ₦1 billion in general damages to the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, for defamatory remarks.
The judgment, delivered by Justice A. S. Ibrahim, stems from a 2022 Arise TV interview where the Senator allegedly described Bello as a "murderer" and a "perpetrator of evil acts."
The court ruled that the statements were injurious to Bello's reputation and lacked credible justification.
In addition to the fine, a perpetual injunction was granted to stop the Senator from making further defamatory claims.
However, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has rejected the ruling "in its entirety," claiming the court failed to evaluate her evidence.
Her legal team has already commenced the appeal process, insisting the comments were made in the public interest.
