Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have uncovered a massive stash of illicit drugs hidden in the apartment of a former councillor in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State.
In a statement released by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the agency revealed that 40 kilograms of skunk—a potent strain of cannabis—were recovered from one of the rooms during a search operation at the suspect's residence.
The suspect, identified as Sheleru Olalekan, 45, is a former councillor who served two terms representing the Orimedu community in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council. He currently works as a legislative aide.
Olalekan was arrested on March 2, 2026, at his home in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki, following intelligence gathered by NDLEA operatives. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted ownership of both the illicit substances and the property where they were discovered.
"In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of both the drugs and the property where they were found. He also confirmed his previous two terms as a councillor representing the Orimedu community in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council," Babafemi stated.
The arrest has sent shockwaves through the Ibeju-Lekki community, where Olalekan was known as a public servant. Residents expressed disbelief that a former elected official could be involved in large-scale drug trafficking.
The NDLEA has intensified its crackdown on drug peddlers across Lagos State, targeting both high-profile individuals and street-level dealers. The agency's operatives have been working on intelligence-led operations to dismantle drug networks operating in the state.
Olalekan is currently in NDLEA custody and will face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations. The case highlights the agency's commitment to pursuing drug offenders regardless of their social status or political connections.
