The Lagos State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of Prince Ademola Akinloye, son of the Ajiran of Agungi, Oba Tijani Akinloye, with the arrest of more suspects linked to the brutal killing.
Prince Akinloye was shot and violently attacked by gunmen on August 26, 2024, along Chevron Drive near Ebeano Supermarket in the Agungi area of Lagos. The incident sent shockwaves through the community and prompted an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators.
Following the initial investigation, nine individuals were arrested after police intelligence linked them to the killing. Authorities also revealed that some of the suspects are connected to the earlier murder of Sheriff Salami, which occurred on April 18, 2023, in the Moba community in Ajah.
Providing an update on the case, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed during a meeting with journalists at the Officers' Mess in Ikeja that additional suspects have recently been taken into custody.
While declining to specify the exact number of new arrests, CP Jimoh confirmed that the suspects have made voluntary confessional statements detailing their alleged involvement in the crime.
"In the course of the investigation, we have apprehended more suspects who have voluntarily confessed to the roles they played in the crime," Jimoh stated.
The police chief emphasized the command's commitment to fully uncovering the circumstances surrounding the killing. However, he revealed that security operatives are still searching for the principal suspect, Ahmad Akanbi, who had earlier been declared wanted in connection with the incident.
"We are still pursuing him and have not relented in our efforts. The command remains determined to ensure that justice is served and that all those responsible for criminal acts are brought before the law," Jimoh added.
Earlier, the Ojomu Royal Family of Ajiran had announced its active involvement in the ongoing investigation into the deaths of Prince Akinloye and Sheriff Salami. In a public notice signed by the monarch, Oba Tijani Adetunji Akinloye, and Alhaji Yekini Olawale Bakare, the family stated that the killings occurred in broad daylight within the Ojomu community.
The royal family emphasized that its participation in the investigation was aimed at ensuring that those responsible for the crimes are held accountable and that residents of the kingdom can live without fear.
According to the family's statement, the investigation is intended to bring justice for the victims and provide closure for the royal family over the tragic incidents that have deeply affected the community.
Residents of Agungi and surrounding areas have welcomed the latest arrests, expressing hope that the police will soon apprehend the remaining suspects and bring them to justice. Many continue to call for heightened security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
