Interim Boss Michael Carrick Slams "Crazy" Refereeing as Man United Draw with Bournemouth
Manchester United’s push for the Champions League took a controversial hit on Friday night after a drama-filled 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.
Interim manager Michael Carrick did not hold back in his post-match assessment, labeling the officiating "baffling" and "astonishing" after two identical penalty incidents resulted in vastly different outcomes.
United took an early lead through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, but the game turned on a 67th-minute incident.
Amad Diallo appeared to be manhandled by Adrien Truffert in the box, but referee Stuart Attwell and VAR waved away the appeals.
Minutes later, Bournemouth capitalized on the momentum to equalize through Ryan Christie.
The drama peaked in the 79th minute when Harry Maguire—who had just celebrated a recall to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad—was shown a straight red card for pulling back Evanilson.
Junior Kroupi converted the resulting penalty to secure a point for the Cherries.
“I don't understand how you can give one and not the other—it’s crazy,” Carrick told reporters. “It’s as obvious as you can get. If that’s what he believes is a penalty for them, then the second one for Amad has to be.”
Despite the frustration, United remain in a strong position for a top-four finish, currently sitting third with 55 points.
Captain Bruno Fernandes echoed his manager's sentiments, questioning why VAR failed to intervene in what he described as a "clear inconsistency."
