Two Dead, Multiple Properties Destroyed in Lagos Gas Tanker and Tipper Collision
A horrific accident in the early hours of Saturday, March 21, 2026, has claimed two lives and destroyed property worth millions along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
The disaster occurred at approximately 2:36 a.m. when a speeding 20-tonne tipper truck rammed into a stationary 30-tonne gas truck that had failed to pull off the highway.
The impact triggered a massive explosion, with the resulting inferno spreading rapidly to three warehouses and 10 roadside shops, including a gym and a generator house.
According to Margaret Adeseye, Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, firefighting teams from Lekki Phase II, Oniru, and Epe II were deployed to the scene to battle the blaze.
The tipper driver and his assistant were tragically recovered from the wreckage, burnt beyond recognition.
However, the gas truck driver managed to escape the scene unhurt.
In a significant win for the first responders, a nearby Total Petrol Station and a 33,000-liter PMS tanker were saved from the encroaching flames.
While the road has since been cleared and normalcy restored, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of stationary heavy-duty vehicles on major highways.
