Scores Injured, Buildings Destroyed as Separate Tanker Explosions Hit Lagos and Cross River
A wave of tragic explosions has rocked Nigeria’s major cities, leaving at least 40 people injured and one person dead in Lagos and Cross River states.
In Lagos, a horrific collision involving a gas tanker occurred in the early hours of Saturday, March 21, 2026, along the busy Lekki–Epe Expressway.
The incident, centered around the Ologuro Bus Stop in Sangotedo, triggered a massive inferno that gutted several roadside shops and warehouses.
According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the disaster was caused by a tipper truck ramming into a stationary gas tanker from behind.
The impact resulted in the immediate death of the tipper driver, who was reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
Two adult females sustained injuries, while the fire spread rapidly to three warehouses and approximately 10 roadside shops, including a local gym.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the crash to "speed violations and loss of control."
Meanwhile, a separate disaster struck Calabar, Cross River State, where 38 people sustained severe burns following a gas leakage at a filling station.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed that the leak escalated into a fire during a gas transfer process.
While no deaths were recorded in the Calabar incident, victims are currently receiving intensive care at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, comparing the sound of the blast to a military-grade bomb.
