Jehovah’s Witnesses Announce Historic Clarification on Blood Transfusion Policy
In a move that marks a significant turning point for the global religious organization, the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses has announced a major clarification regarding the use of a patient's own blood during medical procedures.
While the long-standing ban on receiving blood from another person remains in place, individual members now have the religious freedom to choose whether their own blood can be stored and returned to them during surgery.
In a video statement released Friday, Governing Body member Gerrit Lösch explained that while the Bible commands Christians to "abstain from blood," it is silent on the medical use of one’s own blood.
This update allows for the use of modern techniques such as cell salvage, heart-lung machines, and kidney dialysis based on personal conscience.
“A Christian must decide for himself how his own blood will be handled in the course of a surgical procedure,” Lösch stated, noting that many members already accept procedures where blood is kept in a continuous circuit.
The debate gained massive traction in Nigeria following the tragic passing of social media personality AuntieEsther (Mensah Omolola) in December 2025.
AuntieEsther famously rejected a transfusion while battling cancer, adhering to church doctrine despite medical warnings.
This new clarification provides a bridge between faith and life-saving medical technology, ensuring that members can access advanced "bloodless" surgeries without fear of religious discipline.
