Tragedy as Heroic Father Dies Attempting to Save 6-Year-Old Daughter from Minna Midnight Fire


The Sabon Gari area of Minna, Niger State, has been thrown into mourning following a devastating midnight fire that claimed the lives of Mr. Ikechukwu Michael Njoku and his 6-year-old daughter, Esther. 


The fire broke out at approximately 2:00 a.m. on March 2, 2026, at the family’s residence within the premises of St. Andrew Anglican Church.

Eyewitness accounts describe Mr. Njoku as a hero who, upon realizing his house was engulfed in flames, rushed back into the burning building to rescue his daughter, who was trapped in the children’s room. 


Sadly, the young girl died instantly in the inferno. 


Mr. Njoku managed to escape but sustained life-threatening burns over a large portion of his body.


After a two-week battle at the hospital, Mr. Njoku passed away on March 16, 2026. His wife and three other children also sustained severe injuries and are currently "fighting for their lives" at the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.


“Life is so fragile. Rest in peace Mr Ikechukwu, you are a true hero. Rest in peace my beautiful princess Esther,” a church member shared in a moving social media tribute.


The family has announced that father and daughter will be laid to rest on March 27, 2026, in their hometown of Mebiokpa Okposi Ohozara, Ebonyi State.
