Chilling details have emerged regarding the March 16 terror attack at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where three teenagers attempted to blow up the facility using explosives concealed in a common food flask.
While the attackers were intercepted at the gate, the subsequent blast killed 23 people and injured 108 others.
Ali Musa, a security guard at the facility, recounted how the "unkempt" teenagers—estimated to be between 13 and 14 years old—arrived in a tricycle (Keke Napep).
According to Punch news, they attempted to bypass security by pretending to be relatives bringing meals to patients.
When Musa ordered them to reverse for a search, one of the suspects threw the food flask at him, triggering a massive explosion.
“I kicked the flask back and it fell. I then heard a loud explosion and immediately lay flat. The impact affected my hand,” Musa shared from his hospital bed, where he is recovering from injuries to both legs.
The hospital strike occurred shortly after another blast at the Maiduguri Monday Market, which was reportedly carried out by a boy wearing an explosive vest.
In response to the escalating violence, President Bola Tinubu has ordered Service Chiefs to relocate to Borno State.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, arrived in the state capital on Wednesday to oversee a renewed counter-terrorism offensive.
