Panic gripped commuters on Monday morning following a train accident involving a rear locomotive on the Abuja-Kaduna rail line.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that while several passengers sustained various degrees of injuries, no fatalities were recorded during the incident.
The Managing Director and CEO of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the details in a statement, noting that the accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. near the Asham Train Station.
According to the NRC, the mishap was caused by a "coupling issue" which led to a rear locomotive making forceful contact with the passenger coach immediately behind it.
"The injured passengers were promptly attended to and transported to nearby medical facilities for proper care. No fatalities were recorded," Opeifa stated.
The NRC boss further disclosed that emergency protocols were immediately activated, with technical teams and the Safety Investigation Bureau (SIB) mobilized to the site.
Despite the chaos, the train eventually arrived at the Idu Train Station at 10:39 a.m., roughly 38 minutes behind its original schedule.
This latest incident comes amid growing concerns over the safety of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure. In 2025, the Nigerian Senate launched a nationwide probe into recurring derailments, led by Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
The ad hoc committee is currently investigating the quality of imported materials and the utilization of loans sourced from China for the rail sector.
The NRC has reassured the public that safety remains a top priority and that technical faults are being addressed to restore full operational capacity.
