The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of three young children in Nkwagu village, Abakaliki, by three women who posed as prospective tenants to gain access to the compound.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026. The suspects had arrived the previous night, held discussions with the landlord, and were allowed to spend the night in a vacant room.
One of the mothers, Mrs. Happiness Ofunna Gladys, narrated her ordeal: “I went to the market early that morning... I received a distress call that my two children had been stolen.” Her neighbours identified the three women who spent the night as the culprits who took her two children, aged one and two.
Another victim, Mrs. Nworie Oluchi, explained she saw the women with the landlord on February 6 but suspected nothing. The next morning, while washing clothes, she discovered her two-year-old son missing. His siblings said one of the women had sent him to buy biscuits.
“I rushed to ask the women about my son, and one of them claimed they sent him to buy biscuits and even offered to help bring him back,” Oluchi said. “I went inside briefly to change my clothes, and before I came out, the children raised an alarm that the women had entered a tricycle and sped off with the three children.”
Confirming the incident, Police Spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu said the children were taken from their residence and the matter was reported at the Central Police Station, Abakaliki. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the suspects.
He added that Commissioner of Police CP Adaku Uche-Anya had earlier directed landlords' associations to always verify the identities of prospective tenants and demand credible guarantors before renting out properties—a warning that now seems tragically prescient.
