The Edo State Police Command has arrested three suspected kidnappers in connection with the abduction of Dr. Abu Babatunde and the killing of his younger brother.
Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed in a Sunday statement that the arrests followed sustained, intelligence-led operations targeting criminal networks in Auchi and surrounding areas.
The first breakthrough came on February 3, when operatives from the Auchi Division, with local hunters and vigilantes, intercepted suspect Saminu Kawujie in Warake Forest. A search recovered two knives, two mobile phones, a UBA ATM card, and N20,250. An identification parade confirmed him as one of Dr. Babatunde's abductors.
Further arrests were made on Sunday morning, with Idris Abubakar and Sani Abubakar apprehended at the Specialist Hospital in Auchi. Both were identified as gang members involved in the January 2 kidnapping. Abubakar was specifically linked to receiving ransom payments for the doctor's release.
“Efforts have been intensified towards a comprehensive investigation aimed at dismantling the entire organised criminal network responsible for kidnappings in Auchi and its environs,” the statement noted.
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika reassured the public of the command's determination to resolve all kidnapping cases and bring perpetrators to justice, vowing continued aggressive bush-combing and intelligence-led policing.
Punch had previously reported that Dr. Babatunde regained freedom after his family paid a N50 million ransom. Tragically, his younger brother was found dead on January 5 along the Orley River, reportedly killed by the abductors.
