The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has commenced an investigation into a viral documentary alleging that a Nigerian socialite posed as the Crown Prince of Dubai to defraud a foreign victim of millions of dollars.
Commissioner of Police Uche Ifeanyi, in charge of the Centre, disclosed this during a press briefing on Thursday, confirming that his team is analyzing the publicly available information from the report.
“I tell you, we were able to intercept that case that is actually trending now. Just this morning, I summoned my people to conduct a profiling and analysis of the facts that we’ve seen,” CP Ifeanyi stated.
He noted that the police have not been formally contacted by the documentary producers or the YouTuber behind the report but are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. “We’ve not been contacted by the YouTuber, so what we have on the ground is information that is already out there in the media. We are analysing this and we’re going to do justice to it,” he added.
The cybercrime boss stressed that the police treat all complaints seriously, regardless of origin. “It’s a very serious issue, and the Nigeria Police Force cannot sweep it under the carpet. Whether it’s coming from a YouTuber or a petition, it’s a complaint and we’re going to treat it seriously.”
The documentary, published by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), alleges that a Nigerian identified as Nzube Henry Ikeji impersonated the Dubai Crown Prince in a romance and investment scam that cost a Romanian businesswoman, "Laura," about $2.5 million. The scheme reportedly began on LinkedIn and unraveled due to internal disputes among the suspects.
CP Ifeanyi also warned the public against online investment schemes with unrealistic returns, urging citizens to report suspicious offers to the police.
