The Federal Government has supplied Ekiti State with 80,500 doses of livestock vaccines to prevent and control transboundary animal diseases, bolstering the state's animal health security.
The vaccines, delivered through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) programme, include 50,000 doses of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) vaccine, 30,000 doses of Newcastle Disease Vaccine, and 500 doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine.
State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, received the consignment on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti. He stated the intervention is part of strategic efforts to strengthen animal health systems and boost livestock productivity.
“Effective disease surveillance and control were critical to achieving sustainable food security and improving public health outcomes in the state,” Boluwade said. He assured farmers the vaccines would be deployed through coordinated campaigns for wide coverage.
The State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Olayinka Adedipe, said the delivery aligns with ongoing resilience-building against cross-border animal diseases. He emphasized close work with veterinary officers to ensure proper cold-chain management and effective administration.
Dr. Adedamola Fasoranti, Director of Veterinary Services in Ekiti, stressed the importance of timely vaccination to prevent outbreaks, reduce livestock mortality, and improve productivity.
The National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr. Abubakar Sanusi, commended the state government's collaboration for effective implementation. He was represented at the event by the programme's Legal Adviser, Mr. Ken Agim.
This initiative is a critical step in safeguarding livestock—a vital component of Ekiti's economy and food supply—from devastating diseases that can cross borders and decimate herds.
