NAPTIP Rescues 17 Trafficked Victims, Arrests Four Suspects in Anambra
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has rescued 17 victims of human trafficking and arrested four suspects during a raid on a popular hotel in Onitsha, Anambra State. The operation, supported by the military, also uncovered two suspects linked to baby trafficking across the South-East.
NAPTIP’s Chief Press Officer, Vincent Adekoye, stated that four of the rescued victims tested positive for HIV and are receiving counselling and medical support. The raid followed credible intelligence about underage girls at the facility and concerns over their deteriorating health.
Victims, recruited from Benue, Imo, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom states, revealed they were forced into prostitution and required to remit between N20,000 and N25,000 daily to a handler known as “Madam.” One victim said, “It is not with a good mind that I am doing this job, but it was too late for me to refuse.”
Another victim alleged their “Madam” confiscated antiretroviral drugs and prohibited them from seeking treatment. NAPTIP Director-General Binta Adamu-Bello condemned the action, stating, “This is a criminal act, and we have launched a manhunt for her.” The hotel owner has been invited for questioning.
