Manchester United managerial target Roberto De Zerbi has left Marseille by mutual consent following a heavy 5-0 defeat to PSG, the Ligue 1 club announced Wednesday.
The Italian, formerly of Brighton, joined Marseille in summer 2024 and secured Champions League qualification in his first season, signing high-profile players including ex-United winger Mason Greenwood.
However, this season has proven difficult. Marseille were eliminated from the Champions League last month after a 3-0 loss to Club Brugge. Following draws and a cup win, Sunday's thrashing at champions PSG proved the final straw.
In a statement, Marseille said: "Olympique de Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi... have announced the end of their collaboration by mutual agreement. Following discussions between all stakeholders in the club's management... it was decided to make a change at the helm of the first team."
De Zerbi is considered a leading candidate to permanently replace Ruben Amorim at United this summer. His preference for a head coach role—rather than a traditional manager position—aligns with Ineos's structural philosophy.
Last month, after the Liverpool defeat, De Zerbi was asked about a Premier League return. "I don't know in this moment... I am working in Marseille. I am very happy to stay here. I am working with passion and for the future, I don't know," he responded.
His Marseille spell could count against him, but United are unlikely to rush a decision given Michael Carrick's impressive interim tenure. Carrick won his first four matches and extended the unbeaten run with a late equalizer against West Ham.
De Zerbi is also expected to be linked with Tottenham following Thomas Frank's sacking. The Italian's availability at this critical juncture places him at the center of Premier League managerial speculation.
