The corruption trial of former Nigerian Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke resumed in London with prosecutors detailing her extravagant spending, including a single-day splurge of £140,000 at a luxury antiques store.
The court heard that the former minister allegedly purchased high-end furniture, bespoke lighting, and decorative art during her tenure, with payments made through intermediaries. Alison-Madueke, the first female OPEC president, denies multiple bribery charges linked to her oversight of Nigeria’s oil sector between 2011 and 2015.
Prosecutors allege she accepted cash, luxury benefits, private jet flights, school fees, and high-end shopping sprees in exchange for influencing energy contracts. Defence lawyer Jonathan Laidlaw argued that critical evidence proving her innocence had been lost over the 11-year investigation delay and that Nigerian ministers are forbidden from holding foreign bank accounts.
